The weather has been getting nice again finally which is great news because I've been dying for some nice sun setting on location shots. I also wanted to start taping behind the scenes stuff for this site. One out of two aint bad.
Today I was meeting up with a friend who Im helping with a little project of his. I was also going to take some photos of a costume for said project if we had time. We started talking about shoots and locations that would really make it all work on the drive to my house.
Next thing I know Im packing up my gear and we're rushing out of the house to beat the sunset.
I wish i planned it out a bit more. It was all random, but also very fun. I only wish all my batteries were charged, especially for my SD750 so I could video blog the shoots like I've been wanting too. It would also require less typing here >.<
We got to the scenic overlook with what seemed to be about an hour left of sunlight. We grabbed the gear and headed out for the hike. Slowly we both started to notice the trail wasn't matching up with what we looked up.
Eventually we reached a part of the trail where there was this object at the top of this little boulder hill. We somehow reached the state border while in the middle of the woods.
With the sun falling quick, we decided to just shoot here. (which worked anyway)
We started setting up, looking for spots to shoot. I realized a couple things on this outing. I love my back backer studio, but there are things I should always include in it during an outdoor on-location shoot.
Some form of weights would of helped weigh down the lightstand from falling. (along with my westcott apollo and nikon flash)
Not sure how much help it would of been though, there wasnt much even ground around. In the picture to the left the stand was sitting on a flat part of two boulders. The wind didnt let that last that long.
I ended up having to hold the light stand in the air with one hand angling it down the way i wanted it while I shot most of the pictures with a wide angle lens in the other.
A third person would of definately helped by being a VAL. (voice activated lightstand). I also wasnt able to set up the 2nd and 3rd flashes for more options (didnt bother me that much, i felt the apollo was enough at the time)
The sun was nearly gone which I could of cared less about, except that the entrance to the trails closed at dusk. We broke down the equipment packed up and hauled ass back through the trails. Just as we got back to the car, Parkway police told us we had to leave.
Im happy with the results for a completely random, unplanned, and non prepared quick shoot.
